The NHS National Prion Clinic

The NHS National Prion Clinic (NPC), which is based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, comprises specialist mobile teams that provide diagnosis and care for patients with, or suspected of having, any form of prion disease.

The clinic offers emotional and clinical support to patients and their families, and aims to work alongside local care teams. The NPC is the national referral centre for prion disease providing care to patients all over the UK.

It has teamed up with the MRC Prion Unit at UCL Institute of Neurology on an extensive research programme to promote early diagnosis and develop treatments for this currently fatal group of rare progressive neurodegenerative diseases. Given the rapidly changing symptoms in prion disease, it is often a chaotic and stressful time for families.
