Collaborating with set designer Franz Vitali, Floating Architectural Spaces (4-15 June) is a series of artworks presenting a new and contemporary vision of architecture. The exhibition is coming to London after a successful tour of other European countries.
Alec is a charge nurse at UCLH’s busy endoscopy unit – he started his training at The Middlesex Hospital and University College Hospital in 1990 before qualifying in 1993, and has worked at UCLH ever since.
Although art was a childhood passion, it wasn’t until Alec’s mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2016 that he reignited his passion for art and architecture. Alec explains, “I remember enjoying drawing typical country houses and steam engines, and an A2 size drawing of Sydney Harbour as a child, but life events took a different direction and I didn’t do any art at all. When my mother was diagnosed, I started sketching architecture and set myself the challenge to create increasingly detailed drawings each time. When the pandemic arrived it became my way of unwinding, and has continued ever since."
Recently, Alec's work at UCLH and artistic passion have combined, with his graphite and ink drawing of The Middlesex Hospital commissioned for display in the endoscopy unit at University College Hospital.
“I was so delighted when my artwork was chosen. I proposed the idea because I wanted to acknowledge the history of UCLH – plus, the Middlesex’s endoscopy unit was on the second floor crosspiece of the building, which can be clearly seen in the drawing.
"Some colleagues that work here will remember the building. The rest of the artwork consists of prints of various sketches that I have completed over the last few years, mainly of London, something that we think would be nice for the patients to look at as they are waiting for procedures.”
Alec has kindly chosen to donate a proportion of each artwork sold to UCLH Charity to support the work they do for staff, patients and research at UCLH. We are extremely grateful to him and wish his upcoming exhibition every success.
